Waterfalls Of The Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales has countless waterfalls and I haven’t even had chance to visit all of them yet. Below are some of my favourites and in my opinion some of the best to photograph. They are situated around Aysgarth and the Ingleton Waterfall Trail but I will be adding more as I get chance to visit them all over the coming months.

Pecca Falls - Ingleton Waterfall Trail

The Ingleton Waterfall Trail has some amazing waterfalls. The trail is private and you have to pay to enter but it’s definitely worth the money as it’s a great walk with some incredible landscape. The first great photo opportunity is at Pecca Falls. The viewing area lines up perfectly to photograph these three waterfalls and it normally looks great any time of year.

Thornton Force Waterfall - Ingleton Waterfall Trail

A bit further upstream after passing Hollybush Spout you will reach Thornton Force Waterfall which is the biggest and most impressive waterfall on the Ingleton Waterfall Trail. You can view and access these falls from lots of places as you get closer so you will have endless photo opportunities. These falls tend to get busy though so it’s best to visit during the week if you want to get the place to yourself for a bit. In summer the water flow can be a bit slow but other times of the year it’s usually fine.

Beezley Falls - Ingleton Waterfall Trail

After a great walk across the countryside with some stunning views of Ingleborough you will reach the small cafe at Beezley Farm. Then it’s just a short walk to Beezley Falls. These falls look great any time of year although in summer plants can be a bit overgrown which can obstruct the view slightly. The falls in the background lead into the beautiful triple falls in the foreground and the area is normally quite sheltered as well if it is a windy day. You will also find a number of other falls on the walk back to Ingleton but these are smaller or harder to photograph.

Aysgarth Falls - Aysgarth

Probably the most famous waterfalls of the Yorkshire Dales they are always worth visiting. The Upper Falls have numerous viewing points but can get very busy especially in Summer. The Middle Falls have a small viewing platform with a hedge in front which can get a bit overgrown in Summer making it a bit tricky to get photos. The Lower Falls has an official viewing point and a few areas where you can access the riverside and get some great photos of the multiple level waterfall. Whether you’re a photographer of not you could spend hours here enjoying the scenery.

Cauldron Falls - West burton

Cauldron Falls at West Burton is just a short drive from Aysgarth and it’s a beautiful waterfall that is worth visiting any time of year. You can photograph it from so many different angles or walk around to the waterfall itself. The small footbridge over the river gives a great angle looking upstream towards the falls. The village is only small so on busy days it’s sometime difficult to find somewhere to park. Weekdays, early mornings or evenings are usually the best time to visit.

Mill Gill Force Waterfall - Askrigg

Not far from Aysgarth is the village of Askrigg. Situated just outside Hawes there is usually somewhere to park in the centre of the village and then you can find the footpath towards Mill Gill Force. After a bit of a walk through woodland you will be able to descend down to this impressive waterfall. It’s best to visit when the river is flowing well but even in Summer it’s a great sight. If you continue on the circular walk there is also another smaller waterfall to see.
